Morpheus8 is a fractional radiofrequency (RF) microneedling device that combines two established skin-remodelling technologies into a single treatment. Unlike standard microneedling — which relies on the mechanical action of fine needles to stimulate a healing response in the skin — Morpheus8 delivers RF energy through gold-coated microneedles directly into the deeper layers of the skin and the underlying fat tissue. This combination allows the treatment to address concerns that traditional microneedling alone cannot reach, including skin laxity, deeper scarring, and the early signs of volume loss along the jawline and lower face.

At Berkshire Aesthetics in Maidenhead, Morpheus8 is one of our most requested treatments for patients looking to improve skin texture, tighten mild laxity, and reduce the appearance of acne scarring. This guide explains how the technology works, what it can realistically achieve, what the treatment and recovery involve, and how to decide whether it is the right option for your skin concerns.

How Morpheus8 works

Morpheus8 uses a handpiece fitted with a matrix of 24 gold-coated microneedles. During treatment, these needles penetrate the skin to a precisely controlled depth — typically between 0.5mm and 4mm — before delivering bipolar radiofrequency energy into the tissue. The RF energy generates controlled thermal heating in the dermis and subdermis, which triggers a cascade of biological responses including the contraction of existing collagen fibres and the production of new collagen and elastin over the weeks and months that follow.

The key distinction between Morpheus8 and standard microneedling devices such as SkinPen is the addition of radiofrequency energy. Standard microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin, which stimulates the body’s natural wound-healing response and promotes collagen production. This is effective for improving skin texture, fine lines, and superficial scarring. However, the mechanical action of needles alone does not generate significant thermal energy, which limits its ability to tighten skin or remodel deeper tissue structures.

Morpheus8 addresses this limitation by combining the micro-channelling effect of microneedling with the tissue-tightening properties of radiofrequency. The RF energy heats the tissue at the needle tip, causing immediate collagen contraction and initiating a longer-term remodelling process known as neocollagenesis. Because the energy is delivered beneath the skin surface rather than at the surface, there is less risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) compared with some laser treatments — making Morpheus8 suitable for a wider range of skin types, including Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI.

The depth of needle penetration and the intensity of the RF energy can be adjusted by the treating clinician. This allows the treatment to be tailored to different areas of the face and body, and to different clinical concerns. For example, a shallower depth might be used around the delicate periorbital (under-eye) area, while greater depth and energy settings might be appropriate for treating acne scarring on the cheeks or tightening skin on the jawline.

Who is Morpheus8 suitable for?

Morpheus8 is a versatile treatment that can benefit patients with a range of skin concerns. During your consultation at Berkshire Aesthetics, Dr Langdon will assess your skin, discuss your goals, and determine whether Morpheus8 is the most appropriate treatment option for you. Common indications include:

  • Mild to moderate skin laxity — particularly along the jawline, lower face, and neck, where skin begins to lose firmness with age.
  • Acne scarring — including rolling and boxcar scars, where the combination of mechanical needling and thermal remodelling can improve scar depth and texture.
  • Uneven skin texture and enlarged pores — RF microneedling refines the skin’s surface and reduces the appearance of open pores.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles — especially those around the mouth, forehead, and under-eye area that result from collagen depletion.
  • Jowling and early lower-face laxity — where the skin has started to lose definition but has not progressed to the point where surgical intervention would be more appropriate.
  • Stretch marks and body skin laxity — Morpheus8 can be used on the body as well as the face, with settings adjusted accordingly.

One of the significant advantages of Morpheus8 over certain laser treatments, such as Alma Hybrid CO2, is its suitability for darker skin tones. Because the RF energy is delivered below the skin surface and does not target melanin, the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is considerably lower. This makes Morpheus8 a valuable option for patients with Fitzpatrick skin types IV, V, and VI who may not be suitable candidates for ablative or fractional laser resurfacing.

It is important to have realistic expectations. Morpheus8 is not a substitute for surgical face-lifting in patients with significant skin laxity or excess. It is best suited to patients with mild to moderate concerns who are looking for measurable improvement without the downtime and risks associated with surgery.

Treatment areas

Morpheus8 can be used across a wide range of treatment areas on both the face and body. The adjustable depth and energy settings make it adaptable to the varying skin thickness and sensitivity of different anatomical regions.

Face and neck

The most common treatment areas on the face include the cheeks, jawline, perioral region (around the mouth), forehead, and under-eye area. The neck is also frequently treated, as this area is prone to skin laxity and crepey texture that can be difficult to address with topical products alone. Many patients at our Maidenhead clinic choose to treat the face and neck together in a single session for a more cohesive result.

Body

Beyond the face and neck, Morpheus8 can be applied to body areas including the abdomen, inner arms, inner thighs, knees, and areas affected by stretch marks. Body treatments typically use deeper needle penetration and higher energy settings to account for the greater thickness of skin and subcutaneous tissue in these regions.

Combining Morpheus8 with other treatments

Morpheus8 is often used as part of a broader treatment plan. At Berkshire Aesthetics, Dr Langdon may recommend combining Morpheus8 with other modalities depending on your clinical goals. For example, patients concerned about skin texture might benefit from a combination of Morpheus8 and SkinPen microneedling at different intervals, while those addressing volume loss and laxity together may be advised to combine RF microneedling with dermal filler or skin-boosting treatments. The optimal approach is determined during your consultation and tailored to your individual needs. You can view our full Morpheus8 treatment page for more details on what we offer.

What to expect: the procedure and downtime

Understanding what the treatment involves and what the recovery looks like is important for planning purposes. Here is what a typical Morpheus8 session involves at our clinic in Maidenhead.

Before the procedure

A topical anaesthetic (numbing cream) is applied to the treatment area approximately 30 to 45 minutes before the procedure begins. This significantly reduces discomfort during treatment. Your skin will be cleaned and prepared, and Dr Langdon will confirm the treatment settings based on the areas being treated and your specific concerns.

During the procedure

The Morpheus8 handpiece is applied to the skin in a systematic grid pattern. Each application of the handpiece delivers the microneedles and RF energy to a small area of tissue. Most patients describe the sensation as a combination of pressure and warmth, with occasional brief moments of sharper sensation depending on the area being treated. A full-face treatment typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the areas covered and the number of passes performed.

Immediately after treatment

You can expect redness, mild swelling, and a sensation of warmth in the treated area immediately following the procedure. The skin may also show small pinpoint marks where the needles have penetrated. These are all normal and expected responses to the treatment.

Downtime and recovery

Most patients experience noticeable redness and mild swelling for approximately 3 to 5 days following treatment. During the first 24 to 48 hours, the redness may be more pronounced and the skin may feel tight or slightly rough. By day 3 to 4, the redness typically fades to a pinkish tone that can be covered with mineral makeup if desired. Most patients feel comfortable returning to social activities and work within 3 to 5 days, though individual recovery times can vary.

It is essential to avoid direct sun exposure and to use a broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen diligently during the recovery period and beyond. Sun protection is critical to preventing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and to supporting the healing process. You should also avoid active skincare ingredients such as retinoids, vitamin C serums, and exfoliating acids for at least 5 to 7 days after treatment, or as directed by your clinician.

Results timeline and number of sessions

Morpheus8 results develop gradually as the body’s collagen-remodelling process takes effect. While some patients notice an improvement in skin texture and tone within 2 to 4 weeks of their first treatment, the most significant changes typically emerge between 6 weeks and 3 months after the procedure. Collagen remodelling continues for up to 6 months, meaning the full benefit of treatment may not be apparent until several months after your final session.

The number of sessions recommended depends on the concern being treated, the severity of the issue, and the clinical response to the initial treatment. As a general guide:

  • Skin texture and pore refinement: 1 to 2 sessions may be sufficient for mild concerns, with results assessed at follow-up.
  • Acne scarring: 2 to 3 sessions are typically recommended, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, for moderate scarring. More severe scarring may require additional sessions.
  • Skin tightening and laxity: 1 to 3 sessions are usually recommended, with the number depending on the degree of laxity and the patient’s response to the initial treatment.
  • Body treatments: 2 to 3 sessions are typically advised for areas such as the abdomen or thighs, where the tissue is thicker and may require more intensive remodelling.

Following the initial course of treatment, some patients choose to have an annual maintenance session to sustain the results. Because the ageing process continues, periodic treatment can help to maintain the improvements in skin quality and firmness achieved during the initial course. Dr Langdon will discuss an appropriate maintenance schedule during your follow-up appointments.

Risks, side effects and aftercare

As with any medical aesthetic procedure, Morpheus8 carries risks. At Berkshire Aesthetics, we believe in providing patients with clear, honest information about both the benefits and the potential downsides of any treatment. Our safety protocols are designed to minimise risk, and Dr Langdon will discuss all relevant risks with you during your consultation.

Common and expected side effects

  • Redness (erythema) lasting 3 to 5 days, sometimes longer in sensitive individuals
  • Mild to moderate swelling, particularly in the first 48 hours
  • Pinpoint bleeding at needle entry sites, which resolves within hours
  • Skin tightness or dryness during the healing phase
  • Mild bruising in some patients, especially in thinner-skinned areas

Less common risks

  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): While the risk is lower with Morpheus8 than with many laser treatments, PIH can still occur, particularly in patients with darker skin tones who do not follow sun-avoidance protocols after treatment.
  • Infection: Rare when appropriate sterile technique is used. Patients are advised to keep the treated area clean and to follow post-treatment care instructions carefully.
  • Scarring: Extremely rare with Morpheus8 when performed by an experienced clinician at appropriate settings.
  • Temporary numbness or altered sensation: Occasional and typically resolves within a few weeks.

Aftercare instructions

Following your Morpheus8 treatment at our Berkshire clinic, you will be given detailed written aftercare instructions. Key points include:

  • Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser or the post-treatment product recommended by Dr Langdon.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and apply SPF 50 sunscreen daily for a minimum of 4 weeks.
  • Do not apply makeup for at least 24 hours after treatment (mineral makeup may be used after this period if the skin is not broken).
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, and swimming pools for 48 to 72 hours.
  • Do not use retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, or other active skincare ingredients for 5 to 7 days post-treatment.
  • Avoid touching or picking at the treated area to reduce the risk of infection and scarring.
  • Contact the clinic immediately if you experience signs of infection, such as increasing redness, warmth, pus, or fever.
