Who is skin texture treatment for?
Skin texture and pore treatments are suitable for patients experiencing a range of surface-level skin concerns that affect the smoothness, clarity and overall appearance of the skin. Whether your concerns are related to previous acne, environmental damage or the natural ageing process, a targeted treatment plan can deliver meaningful improvement.
Uneven skin texture is one of the most common aesthetic concerns we see at our Maidenhead clinic. It can present as rough or bumpy skin, visible pores across the nose, cheeks and forehead, a dull or lacklustre complexion, or persistent congestion that does not respond to standard skincare routines. These concerns are often interrelated and benefit from a combined clinical approach rather than a single product or treatment.
Causes of uneven skin texture and enlarged pores
Understanding what contributes to your skin texture concerns helps us select the most appropriate treatment approach. During your consultation, your doctor will identify the underlying factors affecting your skin and tailor your treatment plan accordingly.
Excess sebum production
Overactive sebaceous glands produce excess oil that can accumulate within pores, stretching them over time and creating a visibly enlarged appearance. Sebum also mixes with dead skin cells and environmental debris to form comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), contributing to a rough, congested skin surface. Hormonal fluctuations, stress and certain medications can all increase sebum output, making this a common factor in both teenage and adult texture concerns.
Dead skin cell buildup
The skin naturally sheds approximately 30,000 to 40,000 dead cells per hour, but this process slows with age, hormonal changes and environmental exposure. When desquamation (the shedding process) becomes inefficient, dead cells accumulate on the skin surface, creating a rough, dull texture and blocking pore openings. This buildup also impairs the penetration of topical skincare products, reducing their effectiveness and perpetuating the cycle of congestion and uneven texture.
Sun damage and UV exposure
Cumulative ultraviolet radiation is one of the most significant contributors to textural deterioration. UV exposure degrades collagen and elastin fibres in the dermis, reducing the structural support that keeps pores tight and the skin surface smooth. Chronic sun damage leads to solar elastosis — a thickening and roughening of the skin — along with enlarged pores, uneven tone and a coarsened surface texture. Daily broad-spectrum SPF is essential for both prevention and supporting treatment outcomes.
Ageing and collagen loss
From around the age of 25, the skin's collagen production begins to decline at a rate of approximately 1% per year. This gradual loss of structural protein, combined with reduced elastin and glycosaminoglycan production, leads to loss of skin firmness, sagging around pore openings and an increasingly coarse skin texture. The effect is compounded by hormonal changes, particularly during perimenopause and menopause, when oestrogen decline accelerates collagen degradation.
Dehydration and barrier impairment
A compromised skin barrier allows transepidermal water loss (TEWL) to increase, leading to surface dehydration that exaggerates the appearance of fine lines, pores and textural irregularities. Dehydrated skin often feels tight and rough, and may paradoxically produce more oil as a compensatory response. Environmental factors, harsh cleansing habits and the overuse of active skincare ingredients can all contribute to barrier disruption and worsening texture.
Genetic predisposition
Pore size and skin texture are partly determined by genetics. Individuals with naturally oilier skin types or a family history of enlarged pores may find that their concerns persist despite good skincare habits. While genetic pore size cannot be permanently altered, clinical treatments can significantly minimise the appearance of enlarged pores by keeping them clear, tightening surrounding tissue and improving overall skin quality.
Treatment options for skin texture and pores
We offer a range of clinically proven treatments to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of enlarged pores. Your doctor will recommend a personalised plan based on your skin type, the severity of your concerns and your lifestyle. In many cases, combining treatments produces the most effective and lasting results.
HydraFacial — deep cleansing and extraction
HydraFacial is a multi-step treatment that combines deep cleansing, gentle exfoliation, painless vortex extraction and targeted serum infusion in a single session. The patented vortex-fusion technology dislodges impurities and sebum from within the pores while simultaneously delivering hydrating and brightening serums into the skin. HydraFacial is particularly effective for congested, dull skin with visible pores and can be customised with boosters targeting specific concerns such as oiliness or uneven tone. There is no downtime, making it an excellent option for regular maintenance alongside more intensive treatments.

Medical-grade chemical peels use carefully selected acids — including glycolic acid (AHA), salicylic acid (BHA), mandelic acid and combination formulations — to dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells and accelerate cellular turnover. This controlled exfoliation removes the surface layer of dull, congested skin to reveal smoother, more refined texture beneath. Peels are effective for reducing the appearance of enlarged pores, improving skin brightness and addressing mild post-acne textural changes. The type and concentration of peel is selected based on your skin type and tolerance.

Morpheus8 combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to deliver controlled thermal stimulation into the deeper layers of the skin. The RF energy heats the subdermal tissue, triggering a robust collagen and elastin remodelling response that tightens the skin around pore openings and improves overall surface texture. Morpheus8 is particularly effective for patients with enlarged pores related to skin laxity or ageing, and is suitable for all skin tones when appropriate treatment parameters are selected. A course of 2–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart is typically recommended.

SkinPen is an FDA-cleared microneedling device that creates thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin, triggering the natural wound-healing cascade. This process stimulates new collagen and elastin production, gradually improving skin texture, smoothing rough or uneven areas and refining the appearance of enlarged pores. SkinPen is well-tolerated, suitable for all Fitzpatrick skin types and offers a shorter recovery time compared to RF microneedling or laser treatments. It is an excellent option for patients seeking progressive texture improvement with minimal downtime.

A prescribed medical-grade skincare regimen is an essential component of any skin texture treatment plan. Retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) accelerate cell turnover, promote collagen synthesis and help regulate sebum production. Niacinamide (vitamin B3) reduces pore appearance, strengthens the skin barrier and has anti-inflammatory properties. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic and lactic acid provide ongoing chemical exfoliation that supports smoother texture between clinical treatments. Your doctor will prescribe a targeted routine tailored to your skin type and concerns, ensuring it complements your in-clinic treatments for optimal results.

Your treatment pathway will depend on the nature and severity of your texture concerns, your skin type and your lifestyle. Below are the key modalities we use, often in combination, to achieve smoother, more refined skin.
Expected results
The timeline for visible improvement depends on the treatment modality used and the severity of your texture concerns. Your doctor will provide a realistic timeline during your consultation, but the following general guidelines apply to most patients.
HydraFacial delivers immediate improvement in skin clarity and brightness, with pore congestion visibly reduced after a single session. Optimal results build with regular monthly treatments as cumulative benefits develop over time.
Chemical peels and microneedling treatments trigger progressive improvement as new collagen forms and cell turnover accelerates. Most patients notice smoother texture and reduced pore visibility within this timeframe following their first session.
Skin texture is an ongoing concern that benefits from regular maintenance treatments. Monthly HydraFacials, periodic peel sessions and a consistent medical skincare routine help sustain and build upon your results long-term.
Pore size is largely genetically determined and cannot be permanently changed. However, treatments can significantly minimise the appearance of pores by keeping them clear, tightening surrounding skin and improving overall texture. Your doctor will set realistic expectations during your consultation.
Risks and safety
Skin texture and pore treatments are generally well-tolerated, with most patients experiencing only mild, temporary side effects. At Berkshire Aesthetics, safety is managed through thorough pre-treatment assessment, appropriate treatment selection and detailed aftercare guidance. Common considerations include:
Mild redness and sensitivity are common after HydraFacial, chemical peels and microneedling. Redness typically resolves within a few hours for HydraFacial and within 1–5 days for peels and microneedling treatments.
Light peeling or flaking may occur for 1–3 days following chemical peels as the treated skin renews. This is a normal part of the exfoliation process and should not be picked or forcibly removed.
Temporary dryness or tightness may occur as the skin adjusts to new skincare products, particularly retinoids. Your doctor will advise on gradual introduction and appropriate moisturisation.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a low risk with these treatments but is assessed during consultation, particularly for patients with darker skin tones.
Suitability is assessed on an individual basis. Certain conditions, medications or active skin infections may affect your eligibility for specific treatments.
Aftercare
Following your aftercare instructions carefully is essential for achieving the best possible results and protecting your skin during the recovery period. Your doctor will provide treatment-specific guidance, but the following principles apply to most skin texture treatments:
